NICK: Hello and welcome to Lee’s Summit Town Hall and your Monday News Link presented by Budget Blinds of Lee’s Summit. I am Nick Parker and with me is the Historic Browning’s Liesl Hays.

LIESL: Each week, we'll take a few minutes to give you the news, happenings, and events around Lee's Summit.

NICK: Some local sports news, former Lee’s Summit High School track and field standout Johnny Brackins Jr. has opted to change his college plans and is attending Baylor University, competing for the NCAA Division I Bears. Brackins won three state titles at last year’s MSHSAA State Championships, helping the Tigers capture third place at the meet. Read more about Brackins on our web site.

LIESL: Eighteen student athletes representing the LSR7 district captured honors in the Special Olympics Missouri Summer games. Check out Link2LeesSummit.com for more on each of the 18 athletes.

NICK: Matt Good, 2021 Teacher of the Year for the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District, is a semifinalist for Missouri Teacher of the Year through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Mr. Good is a debate teacher from Lee’s Summit West High School.

LIESL: Wednesday is the first day back in school for the LSR7 School District. Superintendent Dr. David Buck joined Nick and Jason Norbury for last week’s Lee’s Summit Town Hall podcast, discussing this coming school year. The conversation covered the latest COVID-19 protocols as well as a look at some new programs available in the district.

NICK: If you’re a business owner, financial advisor or accountant, Velocity’s next event may be for you. Mark your calendars for 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29 at the Missouri Innovation Campus for a special presentation and informational session on current tax legislation and its effects on you, your business and your clients. Dawn Levey O’Donnell, CEO of D Squared Tax Strategies, based in Washington DC, will lead the session detailing current tax policy proposals and offering inside knowledge on what may be coming next.
